Not everyone has time for a professional bike fit. Here are five quick position adjustments you can make in minutes that yield real aerodynamic benefits.
1. Narrow Your Elbows
Bring your elbows closer together. Even a 2-3cm reduction in frontal area can save watts. Practice on the trainer first to build comfort.
2. Tilt Your Head Down
Your helmet is a major drag source. Tilting your head slightly forward during hard efforts reduces this significantly. Use peripheral vision for road awareness.
3. Tuck Your Thumbs
Hands splayed on the hoods catch wind. Keep thumbs tucked alongside the hood rather than wrapped over. Small change, measurable benefit.
4. Lower Your Stem
If flexibility allows, try removing one spacer from your headset stack. A 10mm drop can save 5-8 watts without dramatic position change.
5. Close Gaps
Zip your jersey fully. Tuck excess fabric. Close any gaps between shoes and socks. Every exposed bit creates turbulence.
These changes cost nothing and can be implemented immediately. Start with one, adapt, then add more.
